Before the internet went to heck and became abominable to use, my girlfriend and I decided to get ready and use an old school text only chat service to communicate with each other. Then the big awful change happened.
The internet changed completely and you couldn't do anything without being monitored, charged extra money, or being forced to reveal all your personal details for "security". This was most services at least. The holdouts were allowed to exist but they were shamed as being backwards, unsexy and for losers.
My girlfriend and I stuck with our chat service though. Luckily the only ones that wanted to stalk us were advertisers. Our service was so old and outdated, the advertisers couldn't catch up with us. They would display ads based on what we were talking about with no one to look at them. We were always a few steps ahead.
We didn't need big fancy features to stay ahead. Emoticons for example we were happy enough just using text. We would use :) , :( , :/ , :O , ^_^ , ;_; , >_O , and various other ways to express ourselves, just like the old days.
