I heard many stories during the pandemic about people getting together without getting together. People playing tennis on different roofs, drive by birthday parties, blowing kisses from the building across the street... all these little stories were inspiring. I particularly liked that last one.
I liked it because it was similar to my own story with a lady who lived in an apartment across the street from mine. Every now and again we would wave at each other and do a thumbs up and stuff like that, but we never spoke or took things beyond friendly, courteous gestures.
Inspired and emboldened by the stories I was hearing online, I decided one day to blow a kiss at her. It was when we were on the rooftops of our buildings putting out laundry in the fine weather. She gave me her usual wave and smile and I blew her a kiss. She stopped dead in her tracks and dropped her basket. Then she did something amazing.
She leaned into her washing line, stretching it back a good distance, before loosening her grip, the washing line was some weird rubbery catapult line that launched her across the huge gap and straight at me. She grabbed me as she landed, knocking me down and laying on top of me, covering my face with kisses.
