My girlfriend was from one of the parts of the world where it was dark for six months of the year. When she came to live with me she hated our summers but loved our winters, especially when the hour went back and the evenings got dark sooner.
She had milky skin and deep set blue eyes. During the summer she loved playing video games in the basement with me or going to the movies, even just to enjoy the air conditioning. She didn't turn to dust when the sun came out or anything, but she did slump around, as if she had a ton of weights on her back.
The hour change just came and I knew she got more chipper and cheerful so we got to do more activities. In this cold weather we went for walks and even went to the beach! Most people thought we were nuts but she loved beachcombing. Whenever we hung out at the beach we set up a tent and would cuddle up inside, looking out at the sea.
On the way home we would look in the window of the summer arcade wistfully as it was closed for the winter. I guess there was something else she looked forward to in the summer after all!
