All of a sudden, no one was sneezing. Everyone was afraid to sneeze in case they'd get yelled at. I resisted every urge to sneeze, and it made my girlfriend unhappy.
She would pull my face mask down and beg me to sneeze in her face, just like I used to. At first I refused but that made her unhappiness grow. I would then try to calm her down by promising her I would when we got home.
People gave us a wide berth. More so than usual. I couldn't shake the feeling that if I did sneeze on her in public I'd be arrested or crucified.
When we got home it was off with the masks. She told me the second my nose got itchy I was to call her.
And I did. She came running and shrieked in delight when I had a sneezing fit. The moisture of my sneeze droplets mixed in with the tears of joy she was crying. Just like that she was happy again.
It was lucky for us that society didn't want people to go out. We didn't want to go anywhere either.
