815 When Every Pub was a Gastropub

There was a period of a few weeks when the government allowed pubs to open but they had to serve food. My girlfriend and I took advantage of the situation and headed to the city for the first time in months.

We came across lots of pubs that were only serving greasy bowls of chicken pieces. We eventually found places that were serving nice food; food they wouldn't normally serve; food that took a bit of imagination and effort to prepare.

On entering these places, we were greeted at the door by friendly but anxious looking staff. We would assure them that we were here for a meal and they would loosen up right away, welcoming us warmly. We knew they were turning away drink-only patrons non-stop.

The atmosphere inside these places were far more chill than they had ever been. No noisy crowds of patrons or sports fans, just people going out for a nice meal.

We had some of the most amazing meals. Food like steak was cooked with care and to our liking without any fuss, pizza was really high quality, whenever bacon was involved it was always crispy, roast potatoes were done to perfection, loads of places had high quality lamb dishes as well.

Staff couldn't do enough for us and offered seconds, which we gladly took. It was the most amazing food and service we had ever gotten when we ate out.
